At St. Matthew's we value reading and place it at the heart of all teaching as a key life skill. All children receive a home reader and reading record to encourage reading in school and at home, as well as having access to a well stocked library.
In KS1 children follow the systematic and synthetic approach to teaching phonics, using the letters and sounds document.
We mainly use the Oxford Reading tree scheme but these books are also supplemented by Big Cat Collins, Songbirds and Dandelion readers.
At St Matthew's we also realise the importance of learning beyond the classroom and subscribe to phonics play and bug club, which support the learning of reading at home.
